The Revenge is a large pirate ship under the command of Stede Bonnet, and the main setting for Our Flag Means Death. It is the ship Bonnet and his crew use when they sail, and is later taken over by Blackbeard and some of his crew. The ship was built on command from Stede and a miniature version of the ship is onboard.[1] The figurehead on the bow of the ship is a unicorn.[2]
The Revenge in an unusual fashion contains a library. Of the books are included "A General History of the Pyrates"[3] as well as several volumes of both "Danmark i Fest og Glæde" and "Kunskapens Bok" [4], which suggests that Stede understands both Swedish and Danish. The ship also contains Stedes closets, a dining room, a double bedroom used by some of the crew members, and a ball room (for cannonballs). In order to make sailing on the ship more pleasant for the crew, Stede had commissioned the Revenge to have a rec center, a state-of-the-art en suite and a jam room.[5] The majority of the crew sleep on deck in hammocks.
Trivia[]
- Production designer Ra Vincent explained that the set of The Revenge was separated across two stages: one that housed a life-sized version of the ship's deck, and another stage for the below-deck environments. While some of the set elements, such as the auxiliary wardrobe, were described in the script, many were not, which led to Vincent leaving what he calls "surprises" for the actors to discover, such as the working fireplace and the two chandeliers in Stede's cabin.[6]
