Fang is a character in Our Flag Means Death played by David Fane.
Appearance[]
Fang (real name Kevin) is a middle-aged dark-skinned man. As David Fane is of Samoan descent, it may be assumed the character's origin is meant to be similar. He wears black clothing, and his distinctive sign is a studded band on his head.
Personality[]
Despite being a pirate, Fang isn't a particularly violent man. He seems to have a soft spot for animals and still is upset about having to put his dog down years after the fact.[1] He's also susceptible to flattery and seems to love it when Lucius Spriggs tells him he has lovely cheekbones.[2] He doesn't seem to like Izzy Hands very much, mostly obeying him to avoid rough treatment.
History[]
Fang is a member of Blackbeard's crew, usually seen alongside Ivan. When he joined the crew, Blackbeard made him put his dog down.[3] He accompanies Izzy Hands to the Mabo Island in search of Stede Bonnet, whom Blackbeard wanted to meet. He then moves to the Revenge, alongside Blackbeard, Izzy, and Ivan. Fang soon gets comfortable aboard Stede's ship and befriends the crew, especially Lucius. When Edward takes the Act of Grace and leaves with Stede, Fang very quickly joins a mutiny against Izzy, who takes over the ship. When Edward comes back, Fang is one of the few crew members whom Blackbeard allows into his "new crew".

Despite sailing with him for quite some time, Fang still has some resentment towards Blackbeard for making him put his dog down.
Izzy Hands[]
Fang clearly dislikes Izzy because of his violent ways, commenting on how he hates it when Izzy pulls his beard. When Izzy takes over the Revenge, Fang joins the mutiny against him along with everyone else.
Ivan[]
Fang and Ivan are usually seen together. They seem to be good friends, although not much is known about their relationship. Ivan reassures Fang when he gets upset over the memories of having to put down his dog.
Lucius Spriggs[]
Lucius befriends Fang quickly. When ordered by Izzy to clean the barnacles off the side of the ship, Lucius compliments Fang's cheekbones in order to be set free. Fang is clearly flattered by this and lets Lucius back up onto the ship, which leads to Lucius sketching Fang naked. Following this, Fang displays a lot of affection towards Lucius, taking care of him when his finger is infected and organizing a sea burial for the amputated digit, during which he calls the scribe "our beloved Lucius".

- Not only is Fang's real name Kevin, but he hails from a 400-year-long line of men with the same name. Even so, Ed briefly refers to him as "Kevin Junior" and his father as "Kevin Senior".[4]
- As of The Curse of the Seafaring Life, Fang has been a member of Blackbeard's crew- or has at least known Ed- for 20 years.
